Trump Gets Praised By His Biggest Haters

In a rare moment of agreement on cable news, even some commentators often critical of President Donald Trump acknowledged the effectiveness of his recent military strategy against Iran.

During a CNN discussion on Saturday, host Michael Smerconish and retired Admiral James Stavridis — now the network’s senior military analyst — both expressed support for the president’s decision to strike key Iranian military targets tied to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The discussion focused on Trump’s strategic decision to target military capabilities connected to Iran’s Kharg Island, while deliberately holding back from destroying the island’s oil infrastructure.

Trump Sends Strong Warning to Iran

Smerconish read from a recent message posted by Trump on Truth Social, where the president outlined the reasoning behind his decision.

In the post, Trump explained that while the United States chose not to destroy Iran’s oil facilities for now, that restraint could quickly change if Tehran attempts to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.

The president cautioned that if Iran attempts to disrupt the secure movement of vessels through the key maritime route, the United States may quickly revisit its current restraint and respond with tougher measures.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as one of the most critical pathways for global energy transportation, with a large share of the world’s oil exports moving through the narrow waterway every day.

Military Analyst Says Trump Strategy Makes Sense

Admiral Stavridis said the president’s approach appears strategically sound.

“I think the president has it absolutely correct on this one,” Stavridis said during the segment.

The retired NATO commander explained that by weakening Iran’s military defenses while keeping key assets intact, the United States maintains powerful leverage in the ongoing standoff.

According to Stavridis, the strategy sends a clear signal to Iran without immediately escalating the conflict beyond control.

He noted that Iranian forces have historically used tactics such as swarms of small boats, naval mines, and missile attacks to threaten large oil tankers traveling through the region.

By targeting military capabilities rather than immediately destroying oil facilities, the U.S. maintains the option to escalate if necessary while discouraging Iran from taking aggressive steps.

Iran’s Tactics Could Threaten Global Energy Supply

Security experts have long warned about the risks posed by Iran’s potential tactics in the Persian Gulf.

Those threats include:

  • Swarms of fast-moving attack boats targeting commercial ships
  • Naval mines placed in critical shipping lanes
  • Short-range missile attacks on tankers
  • Explosive devices attached directly to vessels

Any of these tactics could severely disrupt global energy markets and international trade.

Stavridis said the message from Washington appears clear: Iran should think carefully before escalating tensions in the Gulf.

Even Critics Acknowledge Strategic Impact

Later in the discussion, Smerconish addressed criticism that the Trump administration has not fully explained its broader war strategy to the American public.

However, he also argued that political divisions are preventing many Americans from evaluating the situation objectively.

According to Smerconish, decades of hostility between Iran’s leadership and the United States cannot be ignored when assessing the current conflict.

Iran’s ruling regime has opposed the United States for more than 40 years and has repeatedly threatened American interests and allies in the region.

Despite questions about how quickly the crisis escalated, Smerconish said he believes the removal of key Iranian leadership figures tied to the regime’s military operations could ultimately make the world safer.

What Comes Next for the Middle East Conflict

The discussion also touched on Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who recently assumed power following the death of his predecessor.

Smerconish noted that the leadership transition may not significantly change Iran’s overall approach toward the West.

That means tensions in the region could remain high for the foreseeable future.

For now, however, the U.S. military operation has sent a powerful message — and even some voices typically critical of President Trump are acknowledging that the strategy has had a major impact on the conflict.
