Americans Flee Another Democrat State

A growing number of Americans are leaving high-tax, Democrat-controlled states in search of lower costs, safer communities, and greater economic opportunity. Now, a longtime Maryland prosecutor says he is joining that movement after decades of public service.

Haven Shoemaker, the state’s attorney for Carroll County, says Maryland’s rising taxes, sanctuary immigration policies, and expanding government spending pushed him to make a life-changing decision: leave the state behind.

Maryland Losing Residents as Costs Rise

Shoemaker told Fox News Digital that Maryland has become increasingly difficult for working families, retirees, and taxpayers who feel overburdened by government policies.

“Maryland has become California on the Chesapeake,” Shoemaker said, arguing that the state continues moving further left while everyday residents face higher costs of living.

He added that Maryland is experiencing serious population loss as more families relocate to states with lower taxes and stronger economies.

“Maryland has some of the worst out-migration numbers in the country,” he said. “I don’t know who will be left paying for all the spending, but it won’t be me.”

Sanctuary Policies Draw Criticism

Shoemaker said one major factor in his decision was legislation signed by Wes Moore limiting cooperation between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement through the 287(g) program.

Supporters of the measure say it protects local communities, while critics argue it weakens immigration enforcement and places additional strain on taxpayers.

With border security remaining a top national issue, sanctuary policies continue to spark heated debate across the country.

Higher Taxes, Bigger Government

Maryland lawmakers recently approved a massive $67 billion state budget that included approximately $1.6 billion in tax increases to address budget shortfalls.

Shoemaker warned residents may face even more tax hikes in the future as deficits continue growing.

He said state leaders appear committed to bigger government spending while middle-class families struggle with inflation, housing costs, and everyday expenses.

Moving to North Carolina

After years serving as mayor, county commissioner, state delegate, and prosecutor, Shoemaker says he is heading to North Carolina for a fresh start.

Like many Americans relocating from blue states, he cited affordability, opportunity, and a better quality of life as major reasons for the move.

“If you want to stop the bleeding, maybe it’s time to rethink your policies,” Shoemaker said.

Americans Choosing Red States

Maryland is not alone. Across the nation, residents continue moving from states like California, New York, and Illinois to states such as Florida, Texas, and North Carolina.

For many families, the priorities are clear: lower taxes, safer neighborhoods, job growth, and more freedom.

Final Takeaway

As economic pressure rises and migration trends continue, Maryland’s population challenges may become a warning sign for other Democrat-run states. For many Americans, voting with their feet has become the ultimate response.
