Trump’s Migrant Detention Center Shut Down

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state’s temporary immigration detention facility, known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” will soon shut down after helping federal authorities detain and deport illegal immigrants during President Donald Trump’s border security crackdown.

The closure marks what supporters see as another sign that the Trump administration has successfully rebuilt federal immigration enforcement capabilities, reducing the need for emergency assistance from states like Florida.

Why Florida Built “Alligator Alcatraz”

Governor DeSantis said the detention center was always intended to be a short-term solution.

“When we opened it in the summer of 2025, it was meant to be temporary because the federal government did not yet have enough resources to detain these individuals,” DeSantis explained during a press conference in Titusville, Florida.

The facility was established at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport in the Florida Everglades and began receiving detainees in July 2025.

Its purpose was to support the Trump administration’s aggressive effort to detain illegal immigrants and speed up deportations.

Federal Government Now Has More Resources

According to DeSantis, Washington has received substantial funding over the past several months and has expanded its own detention network.

As a result, Florida’s assistance is no longer required.

The governor said approximately 1,400 detainees currently housed at the facility will be transferred to federal custody over the coming weeks.

Florida Says the Facility Worked Extremely Well

The detention center was operated by the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Under the arrangement, federal immigration officials selected which detainees were sent to the center, while Florida handled intake, processing, and logistical support before deportation.

“The federal government determines who goes there, the state handles the processing and staging, and then federal authorities return them to their home countries,” DeSantis said. “It worked very, very well.”

Supporters argue the facility demonstrated how Republican-led states can partner with President Trump to strengthen border security and enforce immigration law.

Taxpayer Costs and Federal Reimbursement

Florida submitted a request for $608 million in federal reimbursement to cover the cost of building and operating the center.

DeSantis said the request has been approved and expressed confidence that the state will receive payment.

Reports indicate that Florida also incurred additional operating expenses of roughly $300 million, although it is not yet clear whether all costs will be reimbursed.

Democrats Attack the Facility

Representative Maxwell Frost criticized the detention center and alleged that detainees were held in poor conditions.

He also questioned the amount of taxpayer money spent on the project.

Republican supporters, however, argue that the facility played an important role in restoring law and order at the border and protecting American communities from the consequences of illegal immigration.

What the Closure Means for Trump’s Immigration Agenda

The shutdown of Florida’s temporary detention center is being viewed by many conservatives as evidence that President Trump’s immigration strategy is delivering results.

With the federal government now better equipped to detain and remove illegal immigrants, emergency state-run facilities are becoming less necessary.

For supporters of the administration, that is a clear sign that stronger enforcement, better coordination, and decisive leadership are helping restore control of America’s borders.
