President Donald Trump’s new Great American State Fair became the latest target of late-night television after NBC host Jimmy Fallon devoted part of his opening monologue to mocking the patriotic event and several members of the Trump administration.
The 16-day celebration officially opened in Washington, D.C., as part of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary festivities. President Trump headlined the opening ceremony, delivering a speech declaring that “America is back” while emphasizing patriotism, American history, and national pride.
The White House has described the Great American State Fair as a family-friendly, nonpartisan celebration featuring historical exhibits, military displays, carnival rides, food vendors, live entertainment, and educational attractions honoring the nation’s founding.
Rather than focusing on those events, Fallon used the occasion to deliver a series of political jokes aimed at President Trump and several high-profile administration officials.
During The Tonight Show, Fallon joked that Trump stepped in after several musical performers reportedly withdrew from the event.
Fallon opened the segment by joking, “It’s the first event where BYOB means bring your own band,” before poking fun at the ceremony’s military flyover, Lee Greenwood’s rendition of “God Bless the U.S.A.,” and President Trump’s remarks.
The comedian also suggested that Trump’s supporters had seen similar campaign-style events before, joking that the rally format felt familiar.
Fallon then turned his attention to the fair itself, inventing fictional attractions designed to poke fun at members of the administration.
Fallon also took aim at several members of Trump’s administration, joking about a fictional dunk tank starring Vice President JD Vance and a separate “drunk tank” featuring FBI Director Kash Patel. He followed that with a jab at Secretary of State Marco Rubio, quipping that the Florida Republican wasn’t tall enough to enjoy the fair’s Ferris wheel or antique carousel.
Later in the segment, Fallon displayed an edited image referencing criticism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, another jab connected to the event.
The comedy routine quickly generated discussion online, with supporters of President Trump criticizing the NBC host for using a patriotic national celebration as another opportunity for political attacks. Others defended Fallon’s remarks as standard late-night comedy aimed at public figures.
The Great American State Fair is scheduled to continue for 16 days on the National Mall, offering visitors a wide range of exhibits celebrating American history, military service, innovation, agriculture, music, and the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday.
For many supporters, the event represents an effort to celebrate America’s heritage and honor the country’s founding principles. Critics, meanwhile, continue to view it through a political lens, highlighting the deep cultural divide that remains in today’s political climate.
Whether viewed as a celebration of American exceptionalism or another flashpoint in the nation’s political debate, the Great American State Fair has already become one of the most talked-about events of the summer—drawing attention from both supporters and critics long before its final day.
