A leading Republican senator is calling for answers after a deadly Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Maine, putting fresh attention on one of President Donald Trump’s signature priorities: immigration enforcement.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is demanding what she describes as a “full and impartial investigation” into Monday’s fatal shooting in Biddeford, where federal immigration agents were conducting an enforcement operation.
Her comments immediately sparked discussion because they come as the Trump administration continues expanding ICE operations across the country.
Collins Calls For Independent Investigation
In a statement posted on X, Collins said the public deserves a complete accounting of what happened.
“The shooting in Biddeford requires a full and impartial investigation of what happened. It is my understanding that the Biddeford police have secured the site and that the FBI is investigating.”
Federal authorities confirmed the FBI has joined the investigation while local law enforcement secured the scene.
What Happened In Maine?
The shooting occurred around 7:20 a.m. Monday in Biddeford, roughly 15 miles south of Portland.
According to NewsNation, one individual died during an ICE enforcement operation. Officials have not publicly released many details about the events leading up to the shooting.
Reports indicate the person who died was the subject of an ICE operation and allegedly had received a final order of deportation.
As of Monday afternoon, federal immigration officials had not released additional information about the encounter.
State Officials Respond
Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) confirmed that multiple agencies are participating in the investigation, including:
- Maine State Police
- Maine Attorney General’s Office
- Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
- Federal investigators
“I know that situations like these are alarming and frightening,” Mills said in a public statement.
Authorities say additional information will be released once investigators complete their initial review.
Collins Breaks With Trump’s Approach
While many Republicans continue supporting President Trump’s tougher immigration policies, Collins’ request for an independent investigation places her among the GOP lawmakers seeking greater transparency following the deadly incident.
Supporters of stronger border enforcement argue that ICE officers regularly face dangerous situations while carrying out federal law.
Critics, meanwhile, have called for more information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting before drawing conclusions.
Scrutiny Of ICE Continues
The Maine incident follows several other high-profile ICE shootings that have generated national attention.
Last week, ICE agents fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an enforcement operation in Houston. Members of Congress and the man’s family have since requested an independent investigation.
Earlier this year, two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were also killed during separate federal immigration operations in Minneapolis, prompting renewed debate over federal immigration enforcement tactics.
Investigation Now Underway
For now, many of the key facts remain unknown.
The FBI is leading the investigation alongside state and local authorities, and officials have not announced whether any ICE personnel will face administrative review.
The findings are expected to determine exactly what occurred during the operation and whether established federal procedures were followed.
