President Donald Trump shared an emotional story Wednesday about a special act of kindness for the grieving family of one of the four American service members killed during the recent conflict with Iran, saying the experience reminded him of the tremendous sacrifices made by military families across the nation.
Speaking to supporters at Wheeler High School in Atlanta, Trump reflected on his visit earlier in the day to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where the remains of America’s fallen heroes are traditionally returned to U.S. soil. While meeting with one of the families following Wednesday’s ceremony, the president learned they were heading home to Georgia after saying their final goodbye to a loved one who had been killed in the Iran conflict.
After discovering they were traveling to the same state, Trump invited the family to accompany him aboard Air Force One for the flight to Atlanta.
According to Trump, the family was surprised by the invitation and deeply appreciative of the opportunity during such a painful time. Although the flight offered a brief moment of comfort, he said their grief remained overwhelming after losing a son who served his country with honor.
Trump noted that the family lives only minutes from where he delivered his remarks in Atlanta, making the emotional encounter even more personal.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump attended a dignified transfer ceremony honoring four American service members killed in the recent conflict with Iran. Those remembered were Isabella Gonzales of Texas, Tyler James Feehan of Hawaii, Angel S. Rampersad of New York, and Michael Emmanuel Swinton of North Carolina.
Before traveling to Dover, Trump told reporters that paying tribute to fallen American troops is among the most difficult responsibilities any commander in chief faces. He also reiterated his administration’s position that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, saying the fallen service members understood the importance of preventing that outcome.
