Milwaukee Bucks star Kyle Kuzma is making headlines after taking direct aim at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing the progressive Democrat of focusing more on political theater than governing.
The NBA veteran criticized Mamdani after the mayor released a widely discussed video declaring that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “not welcome” in New York City and should face arrest. Mamdani later admitted, however, that his office has no legal authority to detain the Israeli leader.
Kuzma argued that the episode reflected a growing trend of politicians chasing viral moments instead of delivering real results.
Kyle Kuzma Slams Mamdani’s Political Performance
In a post on X, Kuzma said too many public figures are pretending to hold powers they simply do not have.
“This is 2026. People cosplaying as things they don’t have the authority, the talent, or the track record to actually be. Just for content.”
He continued by criticizing what he described as a culture driven by appearances instead of accomplishments.
Kuzma argued that too many people today are pretending to be something they’re not—from local officials acting like national leaders to online personalities presenting themselves as experts—while spending more time seeking attention than producing meaningful results.
Kuzma concluded with a warning that Americans should not mistake social media clips for meaningful leadership.
Kuzma went on to argue that many young people are growing up in a culture that values the appearance of success over genuine achievement, warning that viral moments and catchy soundbites have replaced years of hard work. He ended by urging people not to be distracted by appearances.
The comments quickly gained attention across social media as supporters and critics debated Kuzma’s message.
Kuzma Fires Back at Critics
Not long after his original post, Kuzma responded to people accusing him of taking sides in the Middle East conflict.
He rejected claims that his criticism automatically made him a Zionist.
Kuzma responded by saying that some critics were labeling him a Zionist simply because he was pointing out what he believed were obvious facts, adding that he wasn’t bothered by the accusation.
His response added even more fuel to an already heated online debate.
Mamdani Says Netanyahu Is Not Welcome
The controversy began after Mayor Mamdani released a video criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the United Nations General Assembly, which is scheduled to take place in New York City this September.
In his video message, Mamdani described Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and argued that the Israeli prime minister should be prosecuted.
The mayor also acknowledged that New York City has no legal authority to arrest a visiting foreign head of government, even though his administration reviewed every possible legal option.
Mamdani pointed to the International Criminal Court’s 2024 arrest warrant for Netanyahu over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The United States, however, does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, meaning the warrant carries no legal force under U.S. law.
Despite acknowledging those legal limits, Mamdani declared that Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City.
Trump Defends Netanyahu
President Donald Trump quickly responded to the controversy, making clear that Netanyahu would not face arrest while visiting the United States.
Trump stated that the Israeli prime minister “will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America.”
The president’s comments underscored the sharp divide between his administration and progressive leaders like Mamdani over U.S. policy toward Israel.
Kuzma Stands Apart From Many NBA Stars
Kuzma has increasingly become one of the NBA’s most outspoken critics of progressive politics, separating himself from many high-profile athletes who have embraced left-leaning political causes.
His comments contrasted with those of Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, both of whom reportedly liked Mamdani’s video on Instagram.
Although Kuzma is not Jewish, he has consistently spoken out against antisemitism and expressed support for Israel.
The NBA veteran marked the wedding of former teammate Deni Avdija, who was born in Israel, by posting photos from the event online along with the message, “Baruch Hashem.”
Kuzma also publicly expressed support for Israel following the October 7, 2023 attacks, saying his prayers were with the victims during one of the deadliest days in the country’s history.
A Growing Political Voice
This is far from the first time Kuzma has weighed in on political issues.
Last month, he criticized Sen. Bernie Sanders after Sanders proposed giving the public a 50% ownership stake in artificial intelligence companies, arguing that the idea reflected a growing embrace of government control over the private sector.
With his latest comments targeting Mamdani, Kuzma once again demonstrated his willingness to challenge progressive leaders publicly—even when doing so puts him at odds with many voices across professional sports.
