President Donald Trump has once again found himself at the center of a heated debate over his place in American history.
Some historians, political scientists and media commentators have ranked Trump near the bottom when comparing U.S. presidents. One prominent example is the Presidential Greatness Project’s 2024 expert survey, which placed Trump last among the presidents it evaluated. However, presidential rankings are inherently subjective, and different surveys can produce different results depending on who participates and which qualities are considered most important.
The debate has taken on new significance because Trump is currently serving his second term as president, meaning his complete presidential record has yet to be written.
Trump’s critics point to political polarization, controversies surrounding his leadership style and disputes over his policies as reasons for giving him low marks. His supporters see the picture very differently. They frequently point to his approach to immigration, trade, taxes, deregulation, national security and the federal government as evidence that his presidency has brought significant changes they believe were long overdue.
There is also a broader question about whether historians can fairly judge a president while that president remains in office. Presidential reputations often change over decades as new information becomes available and Americans reconsider the long-term consequences of major decisions.
Presidents who were heavily criticized during their own time have sometimes risen in historical rankings, while others have seen their reputations decline.
That makes the debate over Trump particularly unusual. Americans are not simply evaluating a former president from a distance. They are watching a sitting president continue to make decisions that could ultimately strengthen or weaken his historical standing.
