President Donald Trump is sounding the alarm about the direction of the Democratic Party as Americans prepare for another consequential election season.
Trump and Republicans have increasingly argued that Democrats are moving further to the political left, particularly on economic policy, immigration, government spending and social issues.
Democrats strongly dispute that characterization.
Democratic leaders argue that their priorities are focused on lowering household costs, protecting access to health care and addressing economic pressures facing American families. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, for example, recently framed his party’s agenda around creating what he called an “affordable America.”
The disagreement reflects a much larger political divide.
Republicans contend that the Democratic Party has moved away from the more centrist approach associated with some previous generations of Democratic politicians. They point to the growing influence of progressive candidates and activists as evidence that the party is undergoing a significant ideological transformation.
Democrats counter that Republicans have also changed substantially under Trump and argue that many policies Republicans describe as extreme are intended to address problems involving wages, health care, housing and the cost of living.
For voters, the argument goes beyond political labels.
The party that controls Congress after the midterm elections could have enormous influence over taxes, spending, immigration, energy policy, health care and the remainder of President Trump’s second-term agenda.
Trump is betting that voters will look at the Democratic Party’s current direction and conclude that it has moved too far from the political mainstream. Democrats are betting that concerns about affordability and the Trump administration will motivate Americans to give their candidates another look.
Both sides are making their case.
Ultimately, voters will determine which argument is more convincing.
