President Donald Trump’s “America First” approach to foreign policy has once again sparked a major debate over America’s relationship with its traditional allies.
Trump has long argued that America’s allies should contribute more to their own defense and that international relationships must also serve the interests of American taxpayers. His willingness to pressure friendly governments represents a significant departure from the more predictable diplomatic approach favored by many previous administrations.
Supporters believe that approach is overdue. They argue that being an American ally should not mean receiving an unlimited security guarantee while Washington shoulders a disproportionate share of the financial and military burden.
