President Donald Trump has once again put his “America First” approach at the center of the national conversation, this time by officially renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for U.S. federal purposes.
The decision comes during a period of heightened tensions between the United States and Canada, particularly over trade. Trump has argued that America needs to take a tougher approach toward its northern neighbor and secure agreements that better protect American workers, farmers, manufacturers, and businesses.
Supporters may see the Lake America name as a powerful expression of national pride and another example of Trump refusing to follow political convention. Critics, however, may question whether renaming a landmark shared by the United States and Canada accomplishes anything meaningful.
For many Americans, the larger question is whether the new name represents the kind of patriotic change they want to see from Washington.
President Trump officially renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America.” Do you think this is a great idea?
