Schumer Says Trump Destablized America Further, Is He Right?

Yes

He is.

No

He isn’t.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has intensified his criticism of President Donald Trump as the 2026 midterm elections approach, arguing that the administration’s decisions have made America less secure and created additional economic and political instability.

One of Schumer’s biggest targets has been Trump’s handling of the war with Iran.

In an August statement marking six months of the conflict, Schumer argued that Americans were paying the price through military casualties, higher gasoline prices and continuing uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. He accused Trump of entering the conflict without a sufficient plan for achieving victory or bringing it to an end.

Schumer has made similar arguments on the Senate floor, criticizing both the administration’s handling of Iran and Trump’s description of the conflict.

The Democratic leader has also tied his criticism to Americans’ household finances. In July, Schumer pointed to increased costs for gasoline and other necessities in New York while blaming administration policies including tariffs and the Iran conflict.

Republicans strongly dispute the broader Democratic portrayal of Trump’s presidency. Trump and his allies argue that the president’s policies are intended to protect American interests, strengthen the country and confront threats that previous administrations failed to address.

That disagreement is becoming a defining argument of the midterm campaign.

The debate also comes as control of Congress hangs in the balance. Democrats hope dissatisfaction with the administration will help them gain congressional seats, while Republicans are asking voters to preserve GOP majorities so Trump can continue implementing his agenda. Recent reporting indicates that the fight for congressional control has become increasingly competitive.

For voters, the question ultimately goes beyond the accusations coming from Washington. Americans must decide whether Trump’s policies have made the country stronger and more secure or whether Schumer’s criticism better reflects the nation’s current direction.
