Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams ignited a fresh political controversy after criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a concert in Southern California, prompting a public response from the Department of Homeland Security.
Williams made the remarks Saturday night while performing at North Island Credit Union Amphitheater in Chula Vista, California.
During a performance of her solo song “Ice in My OJ,” Williams paused to deliver an anti-ICE message and also voiced support for Palestinians.
Her comments quickly circulated online and drew criticism from federal officials responsible for overseeing immigration enforcement.
DHS Responds to Hayley Williams’ ICE Comments
The Department of Homeland Security pushed back against Williams’ remarks and defended federal law enforcement officers.
A DHS spokesperson told Fox News Digital that Americans should recognize the work performed by officers who enforce federal immigration laws and protect communities.
“America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe,” the spokesperson said.
The department also suggested that Williams should acknowledge the service and sacrifices made by federal officers rather than publicly attacking them.
The exchange adds to the continuing national debate over immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump.
Williams Has Criticized ICE Before
Williams’ comments in California were not an isolated incident.
During several performances on her 2026 tour, the singer has reportedly incorporated criticism of ICE into live versions of “Ice in My OJ.”
She has also repeatedly spoken out against Trump and Republican policies.
Williams drew national attention during Paramore’s appearance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in 2024 when she used part of the performance to encourage Americans to vote against Trump.
At the time, Williams criticized Project 2025 and argued that conservative policies could negatively affect women, lower-income Americans, racial minorities and the LGBTQ+ community.
She also warned concertgoers about what she viewed as the political consequences of another Trump presidency.
Trump ultimately won the presidential election and returned to the White House in January 2025.
Immigration Enforcement Remains a Major Political Issue
Williams’ latest criticism comes as immigration enforcement remains one of the most closely watched issues of Trump’s presidency.
The administration has made stronger enforcement of federal immigration law a central priority, while opponents have criticized the scope and methods of ICE operations.
Supporters of stricter immigration enforcement argue that the federal government has a responsibility to enforce existing laws, remove individuals who are in the country unlawfully when legally required, and protect communities from public safety threats.
Critics have raised concerns about enforcement tactics, detention policies and the broader impact of deportation operations.
The disagreement has fueled intense political debate across the country.
DHS Reports Sharp Increase in Assaults on ICE Officers
The Department of Homeland Security says federal immigration officers are also facing significantly greater risks while carrying out enforcement operations.
According to DHS, 647 assaults against ICE personnel were recorded between January 20, 2025, and September 20, 2026.
For comparison, the agency reported 37 assaults during the corresponding period between January 20, 2021, and September 20, 2022.
DHS calculates that difference as an increase of approximately 1,649%.
The agency has repeatedly cited those numbers while calling on elected officials, activists and public figures to avoid rhetoric that could increase hostility toward immigration officers.
DHS Secretary Defends ICE Agents
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has also defended ICE personnel and warned about the dangers federal officers face while performing their duties.
Mullin said immigration agents are responsible for enforcing laws passed by Congress and argued that officers should not be personally targeted because of political disagreements over immigration policy.
“The brave men and women of ICE, who are simply enforcing the laws mandated by Congress and protecting the American people, are under attack every single day,” Mullin said.
He added that reported assaults against immigration officers have increased dramatically since Trump returned to office and expanded immigration enforcement efforts.
Celebrity Political Statements Continue to Draw Attention
Williams is one of many musicians and entertainers who have used concerts and other public appearances to discuss political issues.
Celebrity political activism is nothing new, but remarks involving immigration, law enforcement and presidential politics frequently generate particularly strong reactions.
Supporters of Williams say musicians and entertainers have the same freedom to express political opinions as other Americans.
Others argue that performers should exercise greater caution when discussing law enforcement, particularly when federal agencies are reporting increased threats or violence against officers.
The controversy surrounding Williams demonstrates how quickly entertainment and politics can collide in the current media environment.
ICE Debate Likely to Remain in the Spotlight
Immigration is expected to remain a major national issue as the Trump administration continues implementing its enforcement agenda.
For supporters of tougher immigration policies, ICE plays an important role in maintaining the rule of law and enforcing decisions made by Congress.
For opponents, the agency has become a symbol of broader concerns surrounding deportation and immigration policy.
Williams has made clear that she remains strongly opposed to the administration’s approach.
Federal officials, meanwhile, continue to argue that political disagreement should not result in hostility toward the men and women responsible for enforcing federal law.
With immigration remaining one of the most divisive issues in American politics, the dispute between Williams and DHS is unlikely to be the last time a celebrity’s political remarks generate national attention.
