He gave colonialism a bad name.
Christopher Columbus is an Italian explorer credited with the discovery of the American continent in 1492. He essentially opened America to the Western Civilization, which led to its colonization in the subsequent centuries.
People in the US commemorate the Italian explorer by celebrating Columbus Day, a national holiday that falls around the 10th of October every year.
However, there are those, especially from the political left, that are issuing calls to reject the “violent history of colonization” and stop celebrating Columbus Day. There is already another holiday slated to replace Columbus day, called the Indigenous Peoples’ Day, that honors Native Americans instead. President Joe Biden signed a proclamation for the Indigenous Peoples’ Day to become a national holiday on October 11, 2021, being the first US president to do so.
