Protecting Our Families from Hidden Chemicals in America’s Food Supply

In a sweeping move to protect American families — especially children — the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced it will phase out eight harmful petroleum-based food dyes long linked to serious health risks like cancer, hyperactivity, and behavioral disorders.

The plan was unveiled by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, who described the move as part of a broader mission to “Make America Healthy Again.”

“For 50 years, Americans — especially our kids — have been consuming synthetic chemicals without proper warnings or informed consent,” Makary said during Tuesday’s press conference.

🔴 These 8 Artificial Dyes Are On Their Way Out

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will begin by revoking approval for two dangerous additives — Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B — and will work with the food industry to eliminate six others over time:

  • Red No. 40 (Allura Red) – Found in drinks like Kool-Aid and snacks like Starburst
  • Yellow No. 5 (Tartrazine) – Present in Mountain Dew, candy, and snack cakes
  • Yellow No. 6 (Sunset Yellow) – Used in processed foods like Airheads and Lucky Charms
  • Blue No. 1 (Brilliant Blue) – Found in M&Ms, beverages, and artificial frostings
  • Blue No. 2 (Indigo Carmine) – Common in candies like Skittles and Pop-Tarts
  • Green No. 3 (Fast Green) – A petroleum-based dye used in various processed foods

These dyes are used in thousands of products — from children’s cereal and school snacks to energy drinks and over-the-counter medications.

🚫 Linked to Cancer, Hyperactivity, Obesity, and More

Studies from institutions like The Lancet and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have warned about a direct correlation between these food dyes and childhood hyperactivity, behavioral disorders, obesity, and even cancer.

“There’s no reason these petroleum-based chemicals should be in our food. If people want to eat them, let them add it themselves — but don’t slip it into our children’s food without consent,” Kennedy warned.

The worst offender? Red Dye No. 3, originally approved in 1907 and still widely used in birthday cakes, frostings, and candy. It’s been tied to thyroid tumors and behavioral problems, prompting HHS to push for its removal years ahead of the current 2028 deadline.

🌿 FDA to Fast-Track Natural Food Colorings

To help ease the transition, the FDA will approve four natural color substitutes made from real food ingredients — such as watermelon juice, beet extract, and carrot-based alternatives.

“If you’re using petroleum to make your food red, switch to watermelon juice. If you’re using chemicals for yellow-orange blends, use carrots. We have natural options,” Dr. Makary said.

Kennedy and Makary emphasized that this initiative is cooperative, not confrontational — for now.

“Let’s give food companies a chance to do the right thing voluntarily,” said Makary. “But we’re prepared to act if necessary.”

🧠 NIH to Study Long-Term Health Risks of Food Additives

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will launch a comprehensive study into how artificial food additives affect childhood development, attention disorders, gut health, and immunity — issues many parents say have become increasingly common in recent decades.

“If another country poisoned our children with untested chemicals, we’d consider it an act of war,” said health reform advocate Dr. Mark Hyman, who joined Kennedy at the announcement.

🇺🇸 “Make America Healthy Again”: A New Movement

Kennedy’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement is gaining traction among conservative families and parents concerned about the food system. He aims to eliminate harmful additives, improve school lunch programs, and launch a publicly accessible food ingredient database.

Among other reforms under consideration:

  • Labeling sugar as a toxin
  • Creating an open-source health ingredient website
  • Promoting natural alternatives and food transparency

“Sugar is poison. Americans need to know that,” Kennedy said bluntly, adding that he wants to see “zero sugar” in American school meals.

💬 Conservatives Applaud the Crackdown

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, a strong conservative voice, praised the effort:

“Our kids deserve real food — not chemical tricks designed to fool the eye and harm the body. This is about fighting for the future of our children.”

Kennedy was joined by grassroots conservative groups, including “MAGA Moms” — mothers demanding food safety and freedom of choice.

✅ What This Means for Conservative Families

This isn’t just about food coloring. It’s about:

  • Taking back control from unelected health bureaucrats
  • Protecting grandchildren from harmful chemicals
  • Demanding accountability from billion-dollar food corporations
  • Promoting traditional values of honesty, transparency, and real food

For many older Americans who’ve seen the steady decline in food quality over decades, this feels like a return to common sense.

“It’s time to get the garbage out of our food. Enough is enough.”
