Washington, D.C. — a city run by Democrats for decades — has become so dangerous that even Republican lawmakers are taking drastic steps to protect themselves.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) admitted this week that he refuses to wear a seatbelt while driving in the nation’s capital. The reason? To escape fast if targeted by carjackers.
“I drive myself around in my Jeep, and I don’t buckle up in Washington,” Mullin told Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle. “It’s not about ignoring safety — it’s about survival. Carjackings are everywhere. I won’t be trapped by a seatbelt if I need to get out fast.”
Trump Moves In to Restore Law and Order
Mullin’s warning comes as President Donald Trump has taken over the Metropolitan Police Department and deployed hundreds of National Guard troops to clean up D.C.’s streets.
The decision followed a violent carjacking in which a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer was attacked by teenagers — another incident in the city’s growing crime epidemic.
Under the Home Rule Act, a president can federalize D.C.’s police force for 30 days without congressional approval. But Trump has made it clear he wants a long-term crackdown on crime.
“If it’s a national emergency, we can do it without Congress,” Trump declared. “But I expect GOP support right away.”
Republicans Rally Behind Trump’s Crime Crackdown
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) are already working with Trump to launch the DC Security Fund — a major safety package aimed at cleaning up the city.
“Every American should want Washington, D.C., to be safe, clean, and the shining city on the hill,” Graham said.
Democrats Push Back — Even as Residents Live in Fear
Democrats, however, are digging in their heels. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) flat-out rejected Trump’s plan, using profanity to emphasize his opposition.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) has also slammed the move as an “authoritarian push,” even claiming — against residents’ daily experiences — that crime rates are going down. She’s using the controversy to push for D.C. statehood, a long-time Democrat goal.
The Reality in Democrat-Run Washington
For Senator Mullin and countless residents, the situation is simple: in Democrat-controlled Washington, D.C., law-abiding citizens must prepare for violence before it happens.
And with Trump back in charge of public safety in the nation’s capital, conservatives say help may finally be on the way.
