Is it now politically incorrect to call someone grossly overweight “fat”?

Shark Tank regular Barbara Corcoran was accused of fat-shaming when she recently told The View’s Whoopi Goldberg that she could make two pairs of jeans out of the ones Whoopi was wearing.

YES

Fat-shaming is hurtful. Better to say “dietarily challenged”. Or “grotesquely obese”.

NO

Because that’s exactly what they are.

The basic definition of ‘fat’ is “having too much flabby tissue; corpulent; obese.” Calling someone fat is sometimes deemed offensive, not just in modern times, but even many centuries ago. Berating someone because of their excess weight is called fat-shaming, and is frowned upon by some, especially liberals, who are staunch supporters of political correctness.

Other than the risk of getting offended, being excessively overweight is a “common, serious, and costly disease” in the US, according to the CDC. The prevalence of obesity among US citizens between 2017 – 2018 is 42.4%. Conditions caused by obesity include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and certain types of cancer. Also, it is well known that obese people are more susceptible to Covid-19.
