American Farmers Turn Against Trump

For years, rural America stood firmly behind President Donald Trump. Farmers, ranchers, and small-town voters helped fuel the Republican movement and delivered massive victories across key battleground states.

But a new national poll suggests frustration is growing in many farming communities as inflation, rising fuel costs, and economic pressure continue hitting rural families hard.

According to a newly released Fox News survey, Trump’s support among rural voters has dropped sharply over the past year, raising concerns for Republicans heading into the 2026 midterm elections.

Rural America Feeling the Economic Squeeze

The biggest issue appears to be simple: money.

Farmers across the country are battling soaring fertilizer prices, expensive diesel fuel, rising equipment costs, and shrinking profits. Many say the financial pressure is becoming unbearable.

The poll found Trump’s approval numbers among rural voters have fallen significantly since early 2025. Among rural white voters — one of the Republican Party’s most reliable voting blocs — support also declined sharply.

While Trump still maintains strong backing from his MAGA base, cracks may be forming among independents and traditional conservatives worried about the economy.

For many voters in farm country, the issue is no longer political messaging. It’s survival.

Farm Bankruptcies Surge Across America

Economic conditions in rural America have become increasingly difficult over the past year.

According to farm industry data, farm bankruptcies jumped dramatically in 2025 as many agricultural operations struggled to stay afloat amid mounting debt and skyrocketing operating expenses.

Farmers say nearly every part of the business has become more expensive.

Fuel prices remain elevated. Fertilizer costs have exploded. Equipment repairs are draining budgets. And weaker overseas demand for American crops has left many producers with fewer profitable options.

Some farmers now warn conditions are beginning to resemble the farm crisis of the 1980s.

For multigenerational family farms already operating on razor-thin margins, the situation is creating enormous financial stress.

Inflation Becoming a Major Political Problem

The Fox News poll also revealed widespread dissatisfaction with the economy nationwide.

Many voters expressed frustration over affordability, inflation, and the rising cost of living. Rural Americans appeared especially concerned about everyday expenses tied directly to energy prices and supply chain problems.

While Trump continues to receive stronger marks on border security and immigration issues, the economy is increasingly becoming the dominant concern for many independent and swing voters.

Pollsters involved with the survey said affordability is now driving much of the political movement happening inside the Republican coalition.

That shift could become especially important in Senate races, House races, and key swing states where rural turnout often determines election outcomes.

China Farmland Controversy Adds Fuel to the Fire

Another issue creating tension in rural communities is foreign ownership of American farmland.

Concerns over Chinese investors purchasing U.S. agricultural land have intensified in recent years, particularly among conservative voters who see farmland as both an economic and national security issue.

Trump recently faced criticism from some rural conservatives after comments suggesting restrictions on foreign farmland purchases could hurt property values.

The debate has added to broader concerns about China’s growing influence over American supply chains, manufacturing, and agriculture.

For many voters in rural America, the issue goes beyond economics. They see it as part of a larger battle over national sovereignty and food security.

White House Rejects Negative Polling

The Trump administration pushed back strongly against the poll results, arguing the numbers do not reflect long-term voter sentiment.

White House officials pointed to Trump’s strong 2024 election victory and said the administration’s economic agenda is still unfolding.

Officials also argued that inflation, housing affordability, and job growth will improve as more of Trump’s policies take effect.

Despite the recent polling decline, Trump remains highly popular with millions of conservative voters nationwide, particularly among working-class Americans who continue supporting his America First platform.

Still, Republicans are watching closely to see whether economic frustration in farm country becomes a temporary setback — or the beginning of a larger political warning sign ahead of the midterms.
