Bill Maher unleashed unusually harsh criticism of President Donald Trump’s supporters Friday night, telling his conservative viewers that they need to become more skeptical of the president and his political promises.

Maher Has a Message for Conservative Viewers
Maher acknowledged that he has developed credibility with some conservatives despite remaining politically opposed to Trump on numerous issues.
He said conservative fans sometimes approach him and explain that, although they know he is not on their political “team,” they appreciate his willingness to hear them out rather than automatically dismissing them.
Maher has frequently criticized the political polarization that can divide friends and families. He has also repeatedly challenged Democrats on cultural issues, free speech and progressive politics.
But Maher made clear that his willingness to engage with conservatives does not extend to supporting Trump.
Speaking directly to the camera, Maher sharply criticized MAGA supporters for continuing to trust the president.
“You’re not that bright” when it comes to Trump, Maher told them before describing the movement as a “cult.”
He then questioned how many times supporters could continue believing what he characterized as the same political sales pitch.
Those were Maher’s characterizations, not statements of fact, but they represented one of his more direct attacks on the Trump supporters who watch his program.
Trump’s $5,000 Proposal Becomes a Target
Part of Maher’s criticism centered on Trump’s proposal involving $5,000 payments to Americans if Republicans prevail in the midterm elections.
Maher expressed deep skepticism about the idea and argued that Americans should not assume the proposed money will ultimately reach their bank accounts.
He compared the proposal with previous discussions surrounding potential payments connected to government savings and tariff revenue.
