Democrat Endorses Trump’s ICE

A Democratic congressman from Maine is publicly backing federal immigration enforcement efforts under President Donald Trump, breaking ranks with many in his party as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement expands operations in the state.

Rep. Jared Golden, who represents Maine’s more conservative 2nd Congressional District, urged residents not to interfere with ICE activity, saying the agency’s presence “serves the public interest” and reflects its duty to enforce federal law.

Golden’s remarks come amid heightened national debate over immigration enforcement following a fatal incident involving an ICE agent in Minneapolis earlier this month, as well as renewed scrutiny of the agency’s tactics from immigration advocacy groups. Critics have raised concerns about enforcement practices, while supporters argue ICE is focused on individuals with criminal records.

DHS Launches Operation in Maine

This week, the Department of Homeland Security announced a targeted enforcement effort in Maine known as “Operation Catch of the Day.” Golden was among a small group of Democrats who voted to advance DHS funding as the operation began.

According to Golden, ICE agents “have the right and responsibility to enforce federal laws, including immigration laws,” emphasizing that public safety remains a core concern.

Golden said that focused enforcement efforts aimed at individuals with criminal records are in the public’s interest, provided those actions are carried out in accordance with federal law.

Warning Against Interfering With Law Enforcement

Golden also addressed recent protests tied to ICE activity. While demonstrations in Maine—particularly in Portland—have remained relatively calm compared to unrest seen in other states, the congressman warned against actions that could obstruct law enforcement.

“Free speech and lawful protest are protected rights,” Golden said. “But no one should obstruct or impede law enforcement activities. Public officials should also avoid spreading unverified claims that could escalate tensions.”

Pushback From the Left, Support From Moderates

Golden’s stance has drawn criticism from progressive activists and commentators who oppose stricter immigration enforcement. However, his position aligns more closely with the views of voters in his district, which includes conservative rural communities as well as cities such as Bangor and Lewiston.

President Trump carried the district by nearly 10 points in 2024 against then-Vice President Kamala Harris, even as Harris won statewide. Golden narrowly won reelection, highlighting the district’s competitive political balance.

Maine Leaders Split on ICE Operations

Maine Governor Janet Mills, a Democrat, said her administration is monitoring ICE activity to ensure civil rights protections, urging transparency and caution in enforcement actions.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins also weighed in, drawing a distinction between legal immigrants and individuals who entered the country illegally and engaged in criminal activity. Collins said those in the latter category may be subject to arrest and deportation under U.S. law, while warning protesters not to interfere with lawful enforcement.

Open Seat in Trump-Carried District

Golden has announced he will not seek reelection this year, leaving the seat open in a district President Trump has won in all three of his presidential campaigns.

As immigration enforcement intensifies nationwide, Golden’s comments highlight growing divisions within the Democratic Party—particularly in districts where voters continue to support tougher border enforcement and a law-and-order approach to immigration.
