Popular podcast host Joe Rogan is facing criticism from many conservatives after making remarks about Immigration and Customs Enforcement that sharply diverge from President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.
During a recent episode of his podcast, Rogan spoke with Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and questioned the growing use of masks by ICE agents operating in U.S. cities, calling it “a problem on our streets.” His comments immediately sparked backlash among Trump supporters who view federal immigration enforcement as essential to restoring law and order.
Rogan Questions ICE Tactics
Rogan argued that masked federal agents create confusion and distrust, particularly when operating in residential neighborhoods. He suggested that anonymity makes it harder for the public to distinguish legitimate officers from impersonators and limits accountability during arrests.
Rogan has previously criticized Trump-era immigration enforcement, claiming agents sometimes pursue what he described as “easier targets” rather than focusing exclusively on violent criminals or cartel members — a characterization disputed by immigration officials and law-and-order advocates.
Minneapolis Incident Fuels Debate
The controversy intensified following a January incident in Minneapolis involving an ICE agent and a local resident. The Trump administration has stated the agent acted in self-defense, while Democratic officials have disputed that assessment, triggering protests and national media attention.
Rogan called the shooting a “tragic situation,” but argued it contributed to a broader public perception problem for ICE — especially when agents wear masks and use unmarked vehicles.
“If you’re arrested by a local police officer, you can ask for a name and badge number,” Rogan said. “With ICE, that’s not always possible. That creates tension.”
DHS Responds to Safety Concerns
The Department of Homeland Security strongly rejects claims that ICE agents are operating improperly. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has repeatedly stated that officers wear masks to protect themselves and their families from harassment, threats, and doxxing.
ICE leadership has echoed those concerns, noting that agents enforcing federal law have increasingly become targets of political activism and online intimidation.
Conservatives Push Back
Sen. Paul acknowledged that masking may be justified in dangerous border operations but questioned whether it should be standard practice in public urban settings. Still, many conservatives argue the criticism unfairly targets federal officers tasked with enforcing laws that local governments often refuse to uphold.
Vice President JD Vance defended ICE agents this week, emphasizing that federal officers acting within their duties are legally protected and should not be subjected to political retaliation.
Democrats Escalate Rhetoric
Several Democratic officials escalated their criticism. Sen. Ruben Gallego accused ICE of criminal conduct, while Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced legal action aimed at limiting ICE operations in the state.
The Trump administration, however, has made clear it will not retreat. DHS confirmed additional agents will be deployed to Minneapolis as part of broader enforcement efforts, reaffirming the president’s commitment to border security and federal law enforcement.
A Growing Rift
For many conservative voters, Rogan’s remarks highlight a widening gap between influential media figures and the priorities of Americans who support strong borders, lawful immigration, and public safety. As the immigration debate intensifies heading deeper into Trump’s second term, tensions between federal enforcement and progressive local leadership show no signs of easing.
