Joe Rogan is taking a surprising swipe at President Donald Trump, this time targeting the president’s family’s lucrative cryptocurrency ventures and questioning whether the arrangement has crossed a line.
The popular podcast host raised the issue during an Aug. 13 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience while speaking with comedians Ari Shaffir, Shane Gillis and Mark Normand.
Rogan argued that Trump’s involvement in the cryptocurrency industry has created a situation unlike anything Americans have previously seen from a presidential administration.
“Trump has made billions in crypto,” Rogan said before bringing Trump’s sons and their business activities into the discussion.
Rogan then suggested there was an extraordinary amount of money moving through Trump-connected ventures and claimed investigators could potentially take a much closer look at the transactions.
Those were Rogan’s allegations—not a finding that Trump or members of his family committed a crime.
Still, the comments are likely to attract attention because Rogan isn’t exactly known as a reliable voice of the Democratic establishment.
Rogan Turns His Fire On Trump
Rogan has spent years criticizing progressive politics, government overreach and the traditional media establishment.
He also interviewed Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign, in a blockbuster appearance that reached millions of Americans.
That history makes his latest criticism considerably different from the routine attacks Trump receives from Democratic politicians and liberal commentators.
During the conversation, Rogan described Trump’s cryptocurrency activity in extremely harsh terms while simultaneously acknowledging an important point: the activities he was discussing were legal.
His criticism centered instead on whether the law should permit a sitting president and his family to benefit from such extensive cryptocurrency interests.
That question has become increasingly important as Trump’s family expands its presence in the digital-asset industry.
Trump Pushes Back On Conflict Questions
President Trump has repeatedly rejected suggestions that he is improperly using the presidency to enrich himself or his family.
Trump says his children oversee the family’s business operations and that he doesn’t involve himself in their day-to-day decisions.
“I don’t talk to them about much other than to say ‘I love you, kids,’” Trump said while discussing the subject in August.
The White House has also maintained that the president and his family have not engaged in conflicts of interest.
Critics aren’t convinced, however, particularly because of the enormous amount of money now associated with Trump-linked cryptocurrency ventures.
Trump’s Crypto Business Has Become Enormous
The numbers help explain why the controversy refuses to disappear.
Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure showed more than $1.4 billion in income connected to cryptocurrency ventures.
Nearly $800 million was associated with World Liberty Financial, while approximately $635 million came from Trump memecoin sales.
World Liberty Financial was co-founded by Trump, his sons and business partners and has emerged as one of the most closely watched cryptocurrency companies in American politics.
Although Trump’s children oversee his business interests, the president remains a beneficiary of the trust receiving income from those holdings.
For Trump’s critics, that arrangement raises questions about the potential intersection between presidential policy and private financial interests.
But there is an important distinction that can easily get lost in the political rhetoric.
Making money from a legal business does not prove corruption.
Questions about potential conflicts of interest are legitimate, but accusations of criminal or unethical conduct require evidence. The White House has consistently denied that Trump has engaged in wrongdoing.
Foreign Investment Raises More Questions
The debate has become even more intense because of World Liberty Financial’s connections with foreign investors.
An entity linked to the United Arab Emirates reportedly acquired a substantial interest in World Liberty before Trump’s January 2025 inauguration.
The Trump administration later announced an agreement involving advanced American artificial-intelligence chips and the development of a major AI campus in Abu Dhabi.
Critics have highlighted those developments while questioning whether foreign governments or businesses could attempt to gain influence by investing in enterprises connected to the president’s family.
However, the existence and timing of business transactions do not by themselves establish that Trump changed American policy in exchange for financial benefits.
That distinction is important, particularly when dealing with accusations involving a sitting president.
Trump’s Crypto Policies Have Changed Washington
There is also a much larger policy debate surrounding the controversy.
Trump has transformed Washington’s approach toward cryptocurrency, embracing an industry that frequently complained about aggressive regulation and uncertainty under the Biden administration.
Many conservatives and cryptocurrency advocates welcomed the change.
They argue that digital assets represent an important emerging industry and that the United States risks losing investment, jobs and technological innovation if Washington makes it too difficult for cryptocurrency companies to operate domestically.
Trump has repeatedly positioned America as a potential global leader in digital assets.
But his family’s substantial financial interests have given Democrats another argument against that agenda.
Opponents contend that Americans deserve stronger safeguards to ensure government officials cannot personally profit from policies they help create.
Congress Is Now Wrestling With The Issue
The controversy has reached Capitol Hill as lawmakers debate major cryptocurrency legislation.
Members of the Senate have considered ethics provisions involving the cryptocurrency holdings of senior federal officials as part of the broader debate surrounding the CLARITY Act.
Trump has indicated that he would accept a blind-trust arrangement.
The issue puts Republicans in a complicated position.
Conservatives generally support Trump’s effort to reduce regulatory barriers and encourage American cryptocurrency innovation. At the same time, many Republican voters have spent years demanding greater transparency and accountability from Washington.
Those principles don’t necessarily have to conflict.
Lawmakers could support cryptocurrency development while establishing clear ethics standards that apply equally to Republicans and Democrats.
Why Rogan’s Criticism Matters
Rogan’s comments could prove more significant than criticism coming from Trump’s traditional political opponents.
Millions of Americans listen to The Joe Rogan Experience, including independents, conservatives and voters deeply skeptical of the mainstream media.
Rogan has frequently challenged Democrats and progressive political causes, which means his audience may be more willing to consider criticism of Trump when it comes from him.
That doesn’t mean Rogan’s accusations are necessarily correct.
It does mean they’re harder to dismiss as another predictable partisan attack.
For Trump supporters, the central question may be whether the president can continue advancing a pro-crypto agenda while convincing Americans that his family’s financial interests aren’t influencing government policy.
For Trump’s opponents, the massive sums involved will almost certainly remain a major line of attack.
And for Rogan, apparently even a president he has previously treated favorably isn’t immune from criticism.
With billions of dollars connected to Trump-linked cryptocurrency ventures and Congress preparing to determine the future of digital-asset regulation, this political fight is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
