President Donald Trump has faced intense criticism from Democrats throughout his political career, and his current presidency is no exception.
Political opposition is a normal part of American government. Presidents from both parties routinely face scrutiny from lawmakers, journalists, activists and voters who disagree with their policies. The real debate is often over where legitimate political criticism ends and unfair partisan attacks begin.
Democrats have strongly challenged Trump on a wide range of issues, including immigration, federal spending, foreign policy, executive power and the administration’s broader domestic agenda.
Republicans often see the situation very differently.
Many Trump supporters believe the president has faced an extraordinary degree of opposition since he first entered national politics. They argue that controversies surrounding Trump frequently receive more attention than similar disputes involving other political leaders.
Democrats reject that argument. Trump’s critics contend that aggressive scrutiny is warranted because of the significance of presidential decisions and the enormous power of the office. From that perspective, challenging the president isn’t inherently unfair simply because the criticism is frequent or harsh.
That leaves voters with an important distinction to make.
Americans can disagree strongly with a president while still believing that criticism should be based on facts and applied consistently. Likewise, supporting a president doesn’t require believing that every decision he makes is beyond criticism.
With political divisions remaining deep, perceptions of Trump can differ dramatically depending on whom you ask. Some Americans believe he receives treatment that other presidents would never face. Others believe the level of scrutiny simply reflects the controversial nature of his policies and political style.
Rather than letting politicians answer that question, we want to hear directly from voters.
