Hundreds of thousands of American veterans are expected to receive a temporary financial break after the Department of Veterans Affairs announced a three-month premium holiday for participants in the Veterans’ Group Life Insurance program.
The VA announced September 16 that veterans enrolled in Veterans’ Group Life Insurance, commonly known as VGLI, will not be required to pay their insurance premiums for three months, beginning in November 2026 and continuing through January 2027.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, more than 457,000 veterans participate in the program. The department says veterans normally pay an average of approximately $110 per month, meaning the typical participating veteran could save roughly $330 over the three-month period. Collectively, the VA estimates veterans will save nearly $150 million.
VGLI allows eligible veterans to continue life-insurance coverage after leaving military service. Premium costs vary based on factors including the veteran’s age and the amount of coverage selected.
The announcement comes as President Donald Trump’s administration is also pursuing broader changes involving veterans’ services.
On September 8, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to improve the sharing of military personnel and medical records with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The administration says the changes are intended to shorten delays involving disability claims, healthcare enrollment, education benefits, home-loan programs, employment assistance, and other services veterans have earned.
The executive order also calls for departing service members to receive stronger connections to employment, apprenticeship, training, and education opportunities before transitioning into civilian life.
Veterans’ benefits frequently receive bipartisan attention in Washington, although lawmakers can disagree over funding levels, staffing, private healthcare options, disability programs, and how the VA should operate.
The latest premium holiday provides a direct, measurable saving for veterans who participate in VGLI.
