The cost of living remains one of the biggest concerns facing American households, putting renewed attention on President Donald Trump’s economic agenda and his promises to bring prices under control.
The latest Consumer Price Index report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that consumer prices increased 0.4% in August 2026 and were 3.4% higher than a year earlier. Gasoline was one of the major contributors to the monthly increase, rising 3.9% during August.
For millions of families, inflation is more than a statistic. Grocery bills, utility expenses, housing costs, gasoline and other everyday purchases can have a direct impact on household budgets and retirement savings.
President Trump has made lower prices and stronger economic growth central parts of his domestic agenda. His administration and supporters point to tax, energy, regulatory and trade policies as tools for strengthening the economy. Critics have argued that some administration policies could increase costs or take time to produce noticeable savings for consumers.
The larger question is whether Americans believe the president’s policies will ultimately deliver the results they want to see at grocery stores, gas stations and in their monthly bills.
As President Trump continues working to shape the economy during his second term, voters are watching closely.
