President Donald Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom have become two of the country’s most recognizable political rivals, representing sharply different approaches to government and public policy.
Their clashes have frequently extended beyond policy disagreements and into personal criticism, reflecting the increasingly confrontational nature of modern American politics.
Trump’s description of Newsom as a “dirty politician” presents voters with a straightforward question: Do they believe that characterization is justified?
Supporters of Trump may point to their concerns about California’s leadership and Newsom’s record as governor. Immigration, homelessness, crime, taxes, energy policy, government spending, and regulation have all generated heated political arguments in the state. Republicans have repeatedly criticized Newsom’s approach in many of these areas.
