The proposed structure would stand approximately 250 feet tall near Arlington National Cemetery, at Memorial Circle on the Virginia side of Arlington Memorial Bridge. Trump has presented the project as a major new monument connected to America’s history and national identity.
But the proposal has encountered organized opposition.
VoteVets, a Democratic-aligned veterans political organization, has joined other groups campaigning against the project. Opponents have raised concerns about the arch’s proximity to Arlington National Cemetery, its effect on historic views and the possibility that construction could interfere with the solemn atmosphere surrounding military burials.
Those concerns have turned the proposed monument into a larger debate about how America should commemorate its history.
