Democrats are facing a rebellion — and Chuck Schumer is at the center of it.
After forcing his party into a shutdown showdown, the Senate Minority Leader is now watching members of his own caucus break away. Three senators joined Republicans to try and keep the government open, leaving Schumer isolated and humiliated.
Schumer’s Shutdown Gamble Backfires
A federal shutdown hit at midnight after the Senate failed to approve a clean spending bill that had already passed the House.
The continuing resolution (CR) would have kept funding flowing for weeks while Congress finished the budget. But Schumer and his allies blocked it — demanding more left-wing giveaways tied to Obamacare.
Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) slammed the stunt as a betrayal of the American people:
“Schumer has walked his party into a dead end just to satisfy far-left activist groups,” Thune said.
Democrats Jump Ship
Not everyone followed Schumer. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), and Angus King (I-Maine) sided with Republicans in support of the bill.
It was a bipartisan effort — but thanks to the 60-vote rule, the measure still failed 55–45.
“This was a bipartisan vote,” Thune stressed. “Even Democrats know this strategy is a loser and only hurts the American people.”
Johnson Exposes Democrat Hypocrisy
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) pointed out that Democrats passed clean CRs 13 times during Joe Biden’s presidency.
“The only difference now,” Johnson said, “is that Donald Trump is in the Oval Office. Suddenly Democrats want to play games with America’s economy.”
Republicans Stand With Trump
Thune made clear Republicans are ready to work with President Trump to reopen the government and protect American families, veterans, and seniors.
“This can all end today,” Thune said. “It’s time for Chuck Schumer to stop playing politics and start doing his job.”
