A surprising rift has emerged in the America First movement, and it’s centered on artificial intelligence.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), one of President Donald Trump’s most loyal allies in Congress, is raising serious red flags about the administration’s aggressive new AI agenda. Her warning? The push to build massive AI data centers could drain water supplies, erase jobs, and bulldoze states’ rights—all in the name of competing with communist China.
Trump’s Bold AI Action Plan: Innovation or Overreach?
On Wednesday, President Trump unveiled his long-awaited AI Action Plan, signing three sweeping executive orders to:
- Fast-track construction of AI and energy data centers.
- Promote American-made AI exports.
- Ban the use of “woke” artificial intelligence in federal contracts.
The goal: Keep America ahead of China in the global tech race. But Greene says the price may be too high.
“I support AI innovation—but not at the expense of our water, our workers, and our Constitution,” Greene warned in a detailed post on X.
Water Crisis Warning: AI Data Centers Could Drain Local Communities
One of Greene’s biggest concerns is the enormous water demand needed to cool the high-powered servers inside AI data centers.
Under Trump’s orders, these projects would bypass environmental reviews and accelerate construction across state lines. That means less oversight, fewer local safeguards, and greater risk to drinking water supplies.
“I’ve worked in construction my whole life,” Greene said. “When you build something that gulps down water, someone else is going without—families, farmers, towns. That’s the reality.”
States’ Rights in Jeopardy? Federal Power Flexes on AI Rules
The Trump AI plan also threatens to punish states that regulate AI too strictly, by withholding federal funding and having the FCC intervene.
Greene sees this as a dangerous precedent.
“We can’t beat China by becoming China,” she said. “States must be free to set their own rules. Washington shouldn’t use funding as a weapon.”
This echoes a provision from Trump’s recent “big, beautiful bill” that was ultimately removed by the Senate after intense backlash. That clause would have banned state-level AI regulations for 10 years.
The Bigger Picture: Jobs, Freedom, and the Future of America
Greene warns that unchecked AI growth could lead to mass job losses, automation of American industries, and the erosion of local control.
“This is about more than data centers—it’s about human jobs, human rights, and environmental sustainability,” Greene emphasized. “Let’s not rush into a tech future that puts Main Street America last.”
Conservatives Demand a Smarter Path Forward
While Greene still backs Trump’s mission to keep America strong and competitive, she’s urging a wiser, more careful approach—one that respects workers, water, and the Constitution.
“AI can be a tool for good, or a weapon for control,” she concluded. “We must choose wisely.”
Bottom Line:
Even within the MAGA movement, there are growing calls to balance innovation with protection of what matters most—our people, our land, and our freedoms.
