Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina is criticizing Donald Trump Jr. over a costly wedding gift reportedly provided by Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, adding another layer of controversy around the president’s family just weeks before the midterm elections.
During a Sunday appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, Tillis questioned Trump Jr.’s decision to accept the gift and said the situation created unnecessary political problems for Republicans.
“This was stupid on stilts,” Tillis said while discussing the matter with host Jake Tapper.
Tillis argued that Trump Jr., who he said is independently wealthy, should have recognized the political risks associated with accepting an expensive gift from a businessman with connections to Russia.
Wedding Gift Draws Republican Scrutiny
The controversy began after ProPublica reported that Kremlev helped finance wedding celebrations for Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump in the Caribbean.
Kremlev is a Russian businessman and the president of the International Boxing Association. He has been publicly associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, making the wedding arrangement a subject of heightened political scrutiny in Washington.
Several Republican senators have since called for additional information about the relationship.
Sen. John Curtis of Utah asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to consider subpoenaing Trump Jr. regarding the matter.
Sen. John Cornyn of Texas also expressed support for further examination, while Tillis said he believes the Judiciary Committee should investigate after the midterm elections.
Tillis Calls the Situation a “Bad Look”
Tillis said he would leave the procedural decisions to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa, but he made clear that he viewed the controversy as damaging for Republicans.
Tillis said the situation looked like an unprofessional misstep at a time when Republicans needed experienced leadership.
He also questioned how the controversy could possibly help Republicans as the party prepares for an important election.
Tillis said Republicans were just 37 days away from an important election and questioned how the controversy could possibly benefit the party.
Tillis suggested Trump Jr. should provide a clear explanation for why such a substantial amount of money was reportedly spent on the wedding celebration.
Tillis said Trump Jr. may be able to offer a reasonable explanation for why an oligarch reportedly spent tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on a destination wedding celebration.
He added that, based on the information publicly available so far, the situation did not appear to reflect good judgment.
Trump Says His Son Repaid the Money
President Donald Trump has defended his son, saying Trump Jr. repaid Kremlev for the wedding-related expenses.
That claim has become an important part of the Trump family’s response to the controversy.
Bettina Trump has also pushed back against criticism of the arrangement.
In a social media post, she said Kremlev paid for two nights of post-wedding festivities and pushed back on claims that the gesture was politically motivated.
She argued that a friendship does not have to be politically motivated and that an act of generosity should not automatically be viewed as carrying a hidden agenda.
She added that, in some cases, a wedding present should be viewed as nothing more than a simple gift.
Republicans Face an Internal Dispute
The controversy is notable because some of the strongest criticism is coming from Republican lawmakers rather than Democrats.
Curtis, Cornyn and Tillis have all raised questions about the matter, creating an unusual public disagreement involving senior members of the GOP and the president’s family.
Supporters of Trump Jr. argue that receiving a gift from a personal friend does not by itself establish wrongdoing.
Critics, however, say Kremlev’s ties to Russia and the reported size of the gift make additional disclosure appropriate.
No finding of illegal conduct has been established in connection with the wedding gift.
Why the Timing Matters
The dispute comes at a politically sensitive moment for Republicans.
With the midterm elections approaching, GOP lawmakers are focused on maintaining party unity and avoiding controversies that could distract from campaign priorities such as the economy, immigration, public safety and foreign policy.
Tillis made clear that his primary concern was the political distraction created by the situation.
His comments also demonstrate that Republican lawmakers remain willing to publicly challenge members of the Trump family when they believe an issue could hurt the party.
Whether the Senate Judiciary Committee ultimately launches a formal investigation remains to be seen.
For now, the wedding gift controversy continues to generate questions in Washington and has opened a new public dispute among prominent Republicans.
