The second assailant, 19-year-old Thomas Crooks, attempted to shoot Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July. Crooks managed to shoot the president in the ear before he was fatally shot by police officers. Investigators later discovered that Crooks’ phone contained encrypted messaging accounts from apps based in Belgium, New Zealand, and Germany.
Former Congressman Michael Waltz, who now serves as Trump’s national security advisor, raised concerns over the use of these foreign apps. As a member of the congressional task force investigating the assassination attempts, Waltz has been actively advising the president on the investigation. His questions about the use of encrypted foreign communications tools by a teenager reflect the gravity of the situation and the need for a thorough investigation.
