President Donald Trump is doubling down on his commitment to reduce government waste and streamline the federal bureaucracy, a promise he made during his campaign and one he says is vital to serving the American people.
In a recent interview excerpt with Fox News, set to air just before Sunday’s Super Bowl, Trump emphasized the importance of fulfilling his pledge to cut unnecessary spending and hold government agencies accountable for waste. “I don’t know if it’s kickbacks or what’s going on,” Trump said when discussing the financial state of the government. “I ran on this, and the people want me to find it. And I’ve had great help with Elon Musk, who has been terrific.”
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has faced criticism from Democrats after his advisory group, DOGE, uncovered what they claim to be wasteful and partisan spending within government operations. Despite the controversy, Trump is steadfast in his support for Musk’s involvement, pointing out that the tech billionaire has no ulterior motive in assisting with the investigation. “He’s not gaining anything,” Trump remarked, clearly surprised by any questions about trust. “In fact, I wonder how he can devote the time to it. He’s so into it.”
The president also hinted that Musk’s investigation would soon expand to other areas, such as the Department of Education and the U.S. military. “We’re going to find billions, hundreds of millions of dollars of fraud and abuse,” Trump said, underscoring his mission to uncover waste in every corner of the federal government. “The people elected me on that.”
Mike Waltz, a national security adviser, pointed to the Pentagon’s shipbuilding process as an area that could benefit from further scrutiny, highlighting what he called the “absolute mess” in this sector.
However, not everyone is on board with the efforts. A federal judge issued an emergency order early on Saturday, blocking DOGE from accessing sensitive personal and financial data held by the Treasury Department, citing concerns about the scope of the investigation.
Trump’s interview, which will air at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, offers more insight into his ongoing efforts to drain the swamp and ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely. With the Super Bowl providing a massive audience, it’s clear that the president plans to continue making government accountability a top priority for his administration and for the American people.
