Washington, D.C. — Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is calling out the Biden administration for ignoring serious federal warnings about the crumbling state of America’s air traffic control system, which is now linked to widespread flight delays, outages, and safety risks across the country.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Duffy highlighted a damning report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) titled “Air Traffic Control: FAA Actions Are Urgently Needed to Modernize Aging Systems.” Released in September 2024, the report warns that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has failed to update 17 critical systems, some of which are over 50 years old.
“Biden and Buttigieg were warned. They knew the system was falling apart — and did nothing,” Duffy wrote.

Duffy emphasized that under President Donald Trump’s leadership, the Department of Transportation is finally taking action.
“Working with @POTUS, we are going to do what no administration has done: deliver a world-class, fully modern air traffic control system,” he announced.
This commitment stands in stark contrast to the Biden era’s inaction, despite knowing the FAA’s most vital systems were outdated, unsustainable, and putting public safety at risk.

The GAO report revealed that as of mid-2024, the FAA’s infrastructure posed significant risks to the safety and efficiency of U.S. airspace. These outdated systems are still in use at major travel hubs such as Newark Liberty International Airport, which has recently suffered from hundreds of flight cancellations and delays.
Things worsened last week when air traffic controllers in Philadelphia lost both radar and radio communications while guiding flights — a frightening breakdown that raised alarms nationwide.

Appearing on Fox News Channel’s The Story with Martha MacCallum, Duffy didn’t mince words:
“This wasn’t a surprise to Biden or Buttigieg. They had the report. They knew the FAA was failing. They ignored it,” Duffy said.
He also confirmed he is drafting new legislation to overhaul the system and rebuild from the ground up, saying President Trump has already signed off on the plan.
