President Donald Trump is making it crystal clear that he wants Florida to remain one of America’s strongest conservative strongholds.
This week, Trump once again threw his full support behind Florida Congressman Byron Donalds in the race for governor, signaling just how important the Sunshine State remains to the future of the MAGA movement.
Florida has undergone a dramatic political transformation over the last decade. Once considered one of the nation’s top battleground states, it has steadily shifted toward Republicans thanks to conservative migration, strong support from retirees, and growing GOP gains among Hispanic voters.
Trump carried Florida comfortably in the 2024 presidential election against former Vice President Kamala Harris, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a Republican powerhouse.
Now, with the 2026 midterm elections approaching, Trump appears determined to keep Florida firmly under conservative leadership.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Donalds as a proven fighter and one of the Republican Party’s rising stars.
“I know Byron well, have seen him tested at the highest and most difficult levels, and he is a TOTAL WINNER!” Trump wrote.
The president continued by calling Donalds a future “Great and Powerful Governor for Florida” while giving him his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”
Donalds quickly responded on social media, thanking Trump and promising to continue fighting for the people of Florida.
“I am incredibly honored to earn the trust and endorsement of President Donald J. Trump,” Donalds wrote on X. “I will never stop fighting for the state of Florida!”
Trump originally endorsed Donalds in early 2025, helping launch the congressman’s gubernatorial campaign into the national spotlight. Since then, the president has repeatedly praised Donalds as a conservative fighter capable of continuing Florida’s America First policies.
Meanwhile, Democrats are hoping to make Florida competitive again after years of Republican victories statewide.
Former Republican congressman turned Democrat David Jolly has attempted to position himself as an alternative for voters frustrated over economic concerns and rising costs.
Jolly’s campaign has argued that Donalds is too closely tied to Trump, while Republicans counter that Trump’s endorsement remains one of the most powerful political advantages in the country — especially among conservative voters.
Recent polling suggests the governor’s race could become one of the most closely watched contests of the 2026 cycle.
One Change Research survey showed Jolly narrowly ahead of Donalds, while another poll from The Public Sentiment Institute found the race tied. Earlier polling from Emerson College showed Donalds holding a modest lead with many undecided voters still remaining.
The numbers also revealed that Donalds performs especially well with older voters and conservatives over age 65 — a critical voting bloc in Florida politics.
Political analysts say Florida’s governor race could become a major test of Trump’s continued influence over Republican voters heading into the midterms.
For many conservatives, keeping Florida “ultra-MAGA” is about more than one election. Supporters view the state as a model for conservative governance on issues like border security, parental rights, economic freedom, and opposition to progressive policies coming from Washington.
With Trump now fully engaged in the race, the battle for Florida could quickly become one of the biggest political showdowns in America.
