Republicans are preparing for an unprecedented midterm convention in Dallas, but not everyone inside the GOP is convinced the high-profile event is coming at the right time.
Veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove says he is “a little bit nervous” about the party’s decision to hold the massive gathering less than two months before the November midterm elections.
With control of Congress at stake, Republicans are making President Donald Trump the centerpiece of their closing campaign push. Supporters believe the convention could energize Republican voters and focus attention on the administration’s record.
But Rove is questioning whether the GOP waited too long.
Karl Rove Questions GOP Convention Timing
During an appearance Tuesday on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” anchor Dana Perino asked Rove about the two-day Republican convention at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Rove’s primary concern was timing.
“I’m a little bit nervous about it because, look, we’re in the final stages of the campaign,” Rove said.
He argued that Republicans might have benefited from holding the convention in June or July, when candidates would have had several months to reinforce the themes introduced at the national gathering.
Instead, Republicans will have fewer than two months before Election Day.
That leaves GOP candidates with a relatively short window to capitalize on whatever momentum the convention generates.
Trump Takes Center Stage In Dallas
The Republican gathering is unusual because national political conventions are traditionally associated with presidential election years.
Those conventions normally allow delegates to nominate presidential and vice-presidential candidates while giving the party several days of national exposure.

Organizers reportedly anticipate approximately 30,000 attendees over the course of the two-day event.
The goal is straightforward: generate enthusiasm among Republican voters at a crucial point in the campaign.
Republicans Make Trump A Central Midterm Issue
Trump’s prominent role also makes the convention a significant political gamble.
Republicans hope voters will focus on policies the administration considers major accomplishments, including tax cuts, border security, domestic manufacturing and efforts to reduce prescription drug costs.

That means Republicans will need to convince voters that their economic policies are producing tangible results.
Trump and other speakers are expected to use the convention to make that case.
