Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., recently addressed rumors that First Lady Casey DeSantis might enter the race for governor in 2026, potentially running against her husband, Governor Ron DeSantis, once his term ends. Donalds, who has become a prominent figure in Florida politics, took time on Sunday to speak about the speculation during an exclusive interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures.”
Reflecting on his past support for Governor Ron DeSantis during the 2018 campaign, Donalds noted, “I remember campaigning for Congressman DeSantis back in 2018, when he had the backing of President Trump. That turned out to be great for our state, and we’ve seen Florida thrive under his leadership.” Donalds emphasized the importance of Trump’s endorsement, expressing his confidence in the president’s ability to make successful political decisions. “As we move into 2025 and 2026, I’m proud to have President Trump’s support. His picks have consistently delivered positive results for the Sunshine State,” he added.
In the same interview, Donalds confirmed his own plans to run for governor, stating that his decision followed careful reflection and discussions with his family and friends. “Florida has been my home since I was 17, and I’ve built a life here—raised a family, built a career, and served in both the state legislature and Congress. I want to continue working for the people of this great state.”
When asked about the possibility of Casey DeSantis entering the race, Donalds remained focused on the future of Florida and said he would not engage with primary challengers until they officially declared their candidacies. “We are committed to focusing on the issues that will continue to move Florida forward,” he said.
Donalds made it clear that his priority is working for the people of Florida and advancing the state’s interests, regardless of who his competitors might be in the upcoming race.
