Vander Dussen told NBC News that the emergency developed in an instant, catching many beachgoers by surprise. “The child was quickly overcome by the powerful surf and swept away before anyone could react.”
According to Vander Dussen, the situation became critical within seconds, leaving little time for anyone to react.

He said he was grateful the incident didn’t end in tragedy, adding that he believes the child likely would not have survived had the lifeguards not acted immediately.
Other beachgoers and an additional lifeguard also rushed to help once the teenager reached the child, assisting with bringing him safely back onto the shore.
Paramedics evaluated the boy at the scene before reuniting him with his family. Officials have not reported any serious injuries.
