A new celebrity rumor is making the rounds — and it involves President Donald Trump.
Hollywood actress and outspoken left-wing activist Emma Thompson has resurfaced a decades-old story, claiming that Trump once asked her out to dinner.
The Phone Call That Sparked the Story
While attending the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, Thompson recalled that during the 1998 filming of Primary Colors, she got a phone call in her trailer.
Thompson recounted that the caller identified himself as Donald Trump. She initially assumed it was a prank, but said he went on to invite her to spend time at one of his “beautiful” properties and suggested they have dinner together.
Timing Raises Eyebrows
Thompson said the invitation came the very same day her divorce from actor Kenneth Branagh was finalized. At the time, Trump had also recently separated from his second wife, Marla Maples.
Speculating on his intentions, Thompson said she believed he might have been seeking “a nice divorcee” to have on his arm.
Political Overtones
A lifelong supporter of Britain’s Labour Party and an admirer of far-left leader Jeremy Corbyn, Thompson joked that if she had gone on the date, she might have “changed the course of American history.”
Many conservatives see the story as another example of Hollywood figures inserting themselves into political narratives about Trump — often years after the fact — to keep his name in the headlines for the wrong reasons.
Award and Aftermath
Despite the political undertone of her anecdote, Thompson received the Leopard Club Award at the festival for her career in film.
