President Donald Trump and Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff have been political adversaries for years, and their long-running feud continues to generate attention whenever either man takes aim at the other.
Schiff emerged as one of Trump’s most prominent Democratic critics during Trump’s first administration and played a major role in congressional investigations involving the president. Trump, in turn, has repeatedly criticized Schiff and portrayed him as a symbol of Democratic opposition to his political movement.
Now some Republicans are arguing that Schiff’s continued criticism is motivated by something more personal, suggesting that the California Democrat resents Trump’s political success.
That characterization is a political argument rather than an established fact about Schiff’s personal motivations. Democrats would strongly dispute it, arguing instead that Schiff’s criticism stems from genuine disagreements with Trump’s policies, conduct and approach to presidential power.
Republicans see the relationship differently. Trump survived two impeachments during his first presidency, remained the dominant figure in the Republican Party and ultimately returned to the White House. To his supporters, that political comeback demonstrated that years of investigations, controversies and Democratic attacks failed to end Trump’s influence.
That history helps explain why exchanges involving Trump and Schiff still attract considerable attention.
The disagreement also represents something larger than a feud between two politicians. Trump and Schiff have become symbols of two sharply different political movements and competing visions for the country. Their battles touch on issues ranging from presidential authority and immigration to government accountability and America’s political institutions.
Determining someone’s private motivation, however, is difficult without direct evidence. Republicans can argue that jealousy explains Schiff’s attacks, while Democrats can argue that his criticism is based entirely on political and policy differences.
