The 2026 midterm elections are rapidly approaching, and President Donald Trump is making the stakes clear as Republicans fight to maintain control of Congress.
While Trump himself is not on the ballot, the November elections could have an enormous impact on the final two years of his second term. Control of the House and Senate will determine whether Republicans can continue advancing the president’s agenda through Congress or whether Democrats gain enough power to block legislation and increase oversight of the administration.
That makes this midterm election about considerably more than individual congressional candidates.
For Republicans, maintaining congressional control could help Trump pursue his priorities on taxes, immigration, energy, health care, federal spending and other major issues. Trump’s political operation is also preparing to make his presidential record part of the midterm campaign as Republicans attempt to motivate their voters.
Democrats see the election very differently. They are asking voters to use the midterms as a referendum on Trump’s second term, particularly on the economy, cost of living and foreign policy. Recent polling indicates affordability remains a major concern heading into November.
That is exactly why turnout matters.
Midterm elections frequently receive less attention than presidential elections, but their consequences can be just as significant. Every House seat is on the ballot, along with a portion of the Senate, meaning relatively small shifts in competitive states and congressional districts could determine which party controls Washington.
Americans will ultimately decide whether they want Congress to continue working with President Trump or provide a stronger check on his administration.
Whatever side of the political divide you fall on, November gives voters an opportunity to make their voices heard.
