President Donald Trump is putting enormous importance on the upcoming midterm elections, urging Republican voters to approach November as a defining moment for the country and his administration.
Speaking at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Trump described the election in extremely consequential terms and urged supporters to vote as though he personally were on the ballot. Although Trump himself is not running for reelection this November, the results could dramatically influence what his administration can accomplish during the remainder of his presidential term.
At stake is control of Congress.
If Republicans maintain congressional power, Trump could have a stronger opportunity to advance his legislative priorities. A Democratic victory in either chamber, meanwhile, could significantly change the political environment in Washington and create new obstacles for the White House.
That is one reason presidents routinely become deeply involved in midterm campaigning. Congressional elections can affect taxes, federal spending, immigration legislation, energy policy, judicial priorities, investigations, and numerous other issues affecting Americans.
Trump’s supporters may therefore agree that the stakes are unusually high, particularly given the sharp policy differences between today’s Republican and Democratic parties. Critics may view Trump’s description as political campaign rhetoric intended to increase Republican turnout.
History also shows that midterm elections can serve as an important public judgment on a sitting president and the party controlling Washington. Voters who are satisfied with the country’s direction can reinforce that leadership, while dissatisfied voters have an opportunity to demand change.
Millions of Americans will soon have their chance to make that decision.
