The Trump administration is facing a new legal challenge over the potential presence of federal immigration officers at polling locations during the upcoming midterm elections, adding another contentious issue to an already heated election season.
A coalition of advocacy organizations and the city of Denver filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent armed Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and certain other federal agents from being deployed at or near polling sites.
The dispute raises competing questions involving election security, federal law enforcement authority, immigration enforcement, and voters’ ability to cast ballots without intimidation.
Those challenging the administration’s position argue that armed federal immigration officers at voting locations could discourage some eligible citizens from voting. They are asking a federal court to restrict armed federal officers from polling locations and other places where ballots are collected.
The administration’s position has been characterized differently.
