Cheney, Jack Smith Team Up To Destroy Trump

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office once again, the question of who will lead his Department of Justice (DOJ) has become a subject of intense scrutiny. On Tuesday, former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney raised serious concerns about Trump’s nominations for key DOJ positions, especially in light of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the 2021 Capitol riot. Cheney, a former member of the January 6th Committee, warned that if Trump’s nominees played any role in the former president’s alleged efforts to undermine the 2020 election results, they should not be trusted with the responsibility of upholding the rule of law.

Cheney took to social media to express her concern, emphasizing that the DOJ’s independent investigation into Trump’s actions had drawn conclusions that mirrored those of the Select Committee. “All this DOJ evidence must be preserved,” Cheney wrote. She then called on the Senate to scrutinize Trump’s Justice Department picks, particularly those who may have assisted in Trump’s attempts to overturn the election. “If those nominees cooperated with Trump’s deceit, they cannot now be entrusted with the responsibility to preserve the rule of law and protect our Republic,” Cheney added.

Her words resonate deeply within the Republican Party, especially as the nation grapples with the growing divide over the events of January 6. Cheney, who has long been an outspoken critic of Trump, posed a fundamental question to her fellow Republicans: “Will you faithfully perform the duties the framers assigned to you and do what the Constitution requires? Or do you lack the courage?” This challenge, which calls for unwavering commitment to constitutional principles, remains central to the ongoing debate.

Meanwhile, Trump’s selection of Pam Bondi, a former adviser to his first impeachment defense team, to lead the DOJ has only heightened concerns. Cheney’s warning is not alone—Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) has also pushed for the preservation of evidence tied to Smith’s investigation, especially in light of statements from incoming Trump officials, like Bondi, who have threatened to “weaponize” the DOJ against those involved in the investigations.

Trump himself responded to the release of Smith’s report with fury, dismissing the prosecutor as a “lamebrain” and continuing to assert that he won the 2020 election in a landslide. The escalating tension surrounding Trump’s DOJ appointments highlights a critical moment for Republicans: Will they stand by the Constitution and preserve the integrity of the Department of Justice, or will they allow partisan loyalty to compromise their duty to the American people? The path they choose will shape the future of the nation’s legal system and its commitment to justice for all.
