President Donald Trump is highlighting the economic performance of Republican-led states as Americans continue debating which policies are most effective at creating jobs, attracting businesses and producing long-term economic growth.
Economic performance can be measured in several different ways, including growth in gross domestic product, employment, wages, population, business investment and household income. Because those measurements do not always move together, claims about which states have the “fastest-growing economy” can depend heavily on the specific statistics and time period being examined.
Republicans frequently point to lower taxes, lighter regulation and business-friendly policies as reasons people and companies may choose certain GOP-led states. Democrats, meanwhile, argue that infrastructure, education, public investment and other government programs can also play an important role in economic growth.
For American families, the larger question is not simply which political party gets the credit. It is whether economic policies are producing better jobs, stronger communities and greater financial security.
Trump says red states have the fastest-growing economy. Based on what you’re seeing, do you agree?
