At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), a recent straw poll revealed that California Senator Adam Schiff and Governor Gavin Newsom are seen as the two most significant threats to the future of the United States and the Republican Party. This comes as no surprise to many conservatives, as both figures have consistently aligned with progressive policies that many believe undermine traditional American values.
As CPAC wrapped up, attendees were asked to weigh in on several issues regarding the current political landscape, particularly concerning the threats facing the nation. A strong 19% of respondents named Schiff, a known advocate for impeachment and aggressive investigations into conservatives, as the most dangerous figure. Meanwhile, 16% of attendees pointed to Newsom, whose liberal policies as governor of California have included increasing taxes, supporting sanctuary cities, and undermining Second Amendment rights. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries received 15% of the vote, reflecting concerns over his left-wing agenda and leadership within the House of Representatives.
Additionally, Newsom topped the list of potential 2026 presidential candidates who Republicans fear most, receiving 24% of the vote. His deep ties to the far-left wing and support from Silicon Valley elites make him a formidable force to reckon with in any future race. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro followed closely with 22%, while former First Lady Michelle Obama garnered 14% of the vote—likely due to her widespread name recognition. Former Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, both seen as key Democratic figures in the upcoming election, had less impact, polling at just 3% and 1%, respectively.
This poll, conducted by McLaughlin and Associates from February 19-22, surveyed 1,022 CPAC attendees. The results underscore the growing concern among conservatives about the direction the country could take under the leadership of these prominent Democrats.
