New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene says on their website, “non-white race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity should be considered a risk factor” when it comes to prioritizing Covid-19 medicines that are short on supply. The medicine being talked about include oral antivirals such as Molnupiravir and Paxlovid, and monoclonal antibodies. NYC claims it helps address “longstanding systemic health and social inequities.”
Martin Kulldorff, a Harvard professor and epidemiologist, says, “I have not seen [race] as one of the risk factors for severe disease and death.”
Even the FDA under the Biden administration is urging health care providers to prioritize distribution according to race for the drug sotrovimab, which received emergency use authorization for mild to moderate cases of Covid.
