President Donald Trump is calling on congressional Republicans to move quickly on two major priorities when lawmakers return to Washington after the Independence Day recess.
In a Truth Social post Tuesday, Trump urged House and Senate leaders to make a new budget reconciliation package—what he referred to as “Reconciliation 3.0″—their top legislative focus. The proposal includes $350 billion in additional defense spending and passage of the SAVE America Act, legislation Republicans say would strengthen election security.
The president argued that maintaining a strong military remains essential to protecting the country and advancing his America First agenda.
Trump also praised what he described as improving military recruitment and morale, saying the armed forces are experiencing renewed momentum. He pointed to the recent celebration of America’s 250th anniversary as an example of the nation’s military strength and preparedness.
According to Trump, Congress should build on that momentum by approving a major increase in defense funding without delay.
He urged House and Senate Republican leaders to move the proposal through the budget process as soon as lawmakers return to Capitol Hill, saying national defense should remain Congress’ highest priority.
Alongside the defense package, Trump renewed his support for the SAVE America Act, one of the GOP’s top election-related proposals.
Republican supporters say the legislation would require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections, arguing it would help protect election integrity and prevent non-citizens from casting ballots. Democratic lawmakers have opposed the measure, saying existing federal law already prohibits non-citizen voting and expressing concerns that additional requirements could make registration more difficult for some eligible voters.
Trump said the two measures should advance together, arguing they would strengthen both America’s national security and confidence in its elections.
The president told supporters that investing in the military while tightening election safeguards would help preserve the country’s security and stability for future generations.
Congress is scheduled to return to Washington on Thursday, where Republican leaders are expected to begin work on a packed legislative agenda that includes budget reconciliation, defense funding, border security, and other White House priorities.
Whether GOP lawmakers can quickly unite behind Trump’s proposals will be closely watched in the weeks ahead, as Republicans seek to turn the president’s legislative priorities into law.
