Non-binary individuals are those who refuse to identify as either of the two genders (male or female). They prefer to be addressed by gender-neutral pronouns, not by the traditional “he”, “she”, “him”, “her”, etc.
The most commonly used (and the oldest) gender-neutral pronouns are “they/them/ their” – pronouns that are actually rooted in grammar. Other variants include “ze/hir/hirs” and “ey/em/eir.” Many other variants exist, but they are not used very commonly.
