Should wannabe voters need to produce a photo ID?

Most states require a photo ID for voting, but activists say this requirement discourages some would-be voters.

YES

If you need an ID to board a plane, you should need it to vote.

NO

We’ll take your word for it even if the voter rolls say you’re dead.

The political left and right are split on whether photo ID should be required to vote. The left argues that requiring an ID makes it harder to vote, amounting to voter suppression. The right says that security measures like photo ID are necessary to combat voter fraud.

Only about 20 states in the US have photo ID requirements, including Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. States such as New York, California, and Pennsylvania have no ID requirements at all.

According to a recent Monmouth University poll, the public overwhelmingly supports photo ID, with 80% of respondents saying that they support the measure. While Republicans support it at 91% and Independents at 87%, what’s surprising is that even 62% of Democrats support it.
