The Uyghurs are an ethnic group that predominantly occupy Xinjiang, the northwest region of China. Xinjiang is the largest province in China.

Numerous nations and human rights groups accuse the Chinese government of committing crimes against humanity, and even genocide, against the Uyghurs. Some of the atrocities committed by the Chinese include forced labor and forced sterilization of Uyghur women. Moreover, reports say that more than a million Uyghurs were detained in “re-education” camps and many were imprisoned.

The Chinese government admits the existence of these re-education camps but says they are there to combat Islamic militancy and separatism. It denies every other allegation of wrongdoing.

Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, has said that China is committing “genocide and crimes against humanity.” And in April 2021, the UK parliament declared that China was committing genocide in Xinjiang.
